The Borough Council endeavours to maintain water levels in the Mill Pond at such a level so as to cover the mud flats around its edge. On a regular basis (typically every second or third Spring tide cycle, apart from the summer holiday period) the Council opens the control structures and allows the Pond water to rise and fall tidally, so as to avoid the water becoming brackish. These scheduled openings are automatic with closures occurring 50 hours later (i.e. at approximately high tide + 1 hour, two days later).

These events are subject to suitable prevailing weather conditions. In the event of unfavourable weather conditions the pond may not be opened, and if open may be closed without prior notice being given.
