Hovercraft gets to work on junk
TYRES, traffic cones and scaffolding poles were among the rubbish trawled up
by a hovercraft during a clean-up of a historic pond.
Dozens of people watched in awe as a hovercraft was let loose on Mill Pond,
Emsworth, and pulled up mess from the muddy depths.
The pond was built in the 18th century on a natural creek and was used as a
swimming pool in the 1930s.
Now its walls are used as a scenic walkway by hundreds of residents and
tourists every year.
It is also next to an area of special scientific interest and so has to be
cleaned regularly.
Emsworth Councillor Virginia Wilson-Smith said: 'It really was exciting
stuff.
'Seeing a hovercraft on the Mill Pond was a real spectacle. Now it is much
cleaner and it means the water will flow in and out more easily.'
